Hi,
Use this free Windows app for good 24 to 8 bit conversion, dithered or
not:  ftp://www.jpg.com/pub/PV3.EXE (1.2MB)  This is an old Windows
batch program we wrote a while ago, but it will do a better job than the
commercial packages.
